Somos un museo universitario con autonomía que ejerce libertad de cuestionamiento y proposición en sus prácticas y discursos. Desde un uso crítico de la memoria y el patrimonio ­­­—enunciado a partir de nuestros contextos locales— gestionamos y ponemos en valor nuestra colección, conformada por alrededor de 400 bienes culturales y patrimoniales, correspondientes a fotografías, mobiliario, instrumental científico y equipos técnicos que fueron parte de la enseñanza en las diferentes facultades de la Universidad Central del Ecuador a lo largo del tiempo); asimismo, construimos y activamos la memoria universitaria junto con las comunidades estudiantiles, organizaciones, colectivos y audiencias, al tiempo que proponemos líneas de fuga para la resignificación de los procesos históricos.
Buscamos convertirnos en un laboratorio de investigación, experimentación y creación; un aula abierta y una zona de contacto entre el conocimiento y los saberes, así como un entorno capaz de articular procesos de educación crítica y mediación educativa vinculados con el uso del tiempo libre emancipado y creativo.
El MUCE forma parte del Sistema Integrado de Museos y Herbarios (SIMYH) de la Universidad Central.
